Behringer Firepower FCA1616

1. Technical data

This are the technical properties relevant for me to buy this equipment.
  • 4 x balanced nputs for microphone/instruments in MIDAS-preamp design in the front
  • 4 x balanced line inputs at the back side
  • 8 x balanced line outputs at the back side
  • 2 x independent head phone jacks
  • Frequency 3-dB-bandwidth for all inputs and outputs at least 20 to 20 kHz.
  • Optical ADAT out for 8 x line out extensions or connection to a modern HiFi surround amlifier
  • Optical ADAT in for 8 x line/mic/instrument extension
  • Supported sample rates are 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 KHz and 96 kHz (I am only interested in 48 kHz)
  • FireWire interface for lower latency as USB
  • Low noise input and output (to be evaluated)

Important notes
  • Requires FireWire standard IEEE 1394a-2000, alias FireWire 400, 6-pole cable
  • Supported digital audio formats
    • SPDIF S/PDIF, 2 channels, uncompressed, no codec
    • ADAT S/MUX, 4 channels at 88.2 kHz or 96 kHz
    • ADAT, 8 channels at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz

2. My test report

  • Before I started I got an FireWire-PCI-interface for my computer EX6450 EX-6450 wit TI-chip
  • Mic-Preams noise at the end
  • "MIDAS-preamp design" means, "Music Group" where Uli Behringer is CEO acquired the company MIDAS and they took the preamp design and integrated it into the FCA1616 in some way.
  • The most important part for me
  • Noise on Driver-Init

3. Used components

  • Archwave DM1500 (heart of the FCA1616)
    • Datasheet
    • Prowides Firewire IEEE1394, USB 2.0, ADAT, SPDIF S/PDIF, MIDI interface
    • Digital Mixer for level meter, volume and balance/panning functions (DSP)
    • Offers GPIOs
    • 8 used A/D converters, 24-bit
    • 8 used D/A converters, 24-bit
    • Audio channels: There are different generic and customizable versions of this chip. DM1500E works only at 88.2 KHz or 96 kHz rate providing up to 64 channels over IEEE 1394 and up to 34 channels over USB 2.0.
    • Can sample rates from 44.1 kHz up to 192 kHz
    • ARM processor + DSP
  • Cirrus Logic CS42435 only for sample rate conversion??
    • Product website
    • This IC has own ADC/DAC but I believe it is used to provide the other two supported sample rates at 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz
    • 4 x 24-bit A/D converters
    • 8 x 24-bit D/A converters
  • BeOpAmps 4580R op-amps
    • RC4850 pin and Function Compatible With LM833, NE5532, NJM4558/9, and NJM4560/2/5
  • BeOpAmps TL072C JFET opamp
  • IS42S16400J: SDRAM 64M (4Mx16) 200MHz
  • MX29LV320E: FLASH
  • TSB41AB1: FireWire IEEE 1394a
  • Cirrus 5340CZ: 2 x dual ADC, 101dB, 192kHz, 24 bit

4. Other test reports

5. FireWire interface

I read reports on the internet that people recommend FireWire interfaces with "TI-Chipset". I use the EX6450 EX-6450 wit TI-chip for the FCA1616. The chip implements the full IEEE 1394a-2000 standard. Thats may be the reason why some people complain.
